Do I Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade for an EV Charger?

One of the first things we check on every Boise EV charger quote is the existing electrical panel. Most modern homes are ready to go - but plenty of older Boise bench and North End homes need work first. Here's how to know which camp you're in before you call.

Step 1: check the service size

Open your panel door. The main breaker at the top will say 100, 125, 150, or 200. A 200A service is the sweet spot for a 48A Tesla Wall Connector or any other high-power Level 2 charger.

100A service can sometimes support a Level 2 charger after a load calculation - especially if your home uses gas heat and a gas range - but it's a case-by-case call.

Step 2: count open breaker spaces

A hardwired Level 2 charger needs a 2-pole breaker (two adjacent open slots). If your panel is full, the options are a sub-panel, a tandem breaker (where allowed), or a panel replacement.

If you also have plans for a heat pump, hot tub, or shop tools, it almost always makes sense to size up now and avoid a second service call later.

Step 3: get a load calculation

A licensed electrician can run an NEC load calc to confirm whether your existing service can safely handle the added charger demand. This is required on every permitted EV charger install in the Boise area.
